In a world that increasingly needs skilled trades people, employers often find gaps in the workforce of Michigan's Great Southwest, and nobody knows that moreso than the people working to fill those jobs on a regular basis. Electing to become a better part of the solution instead of a part of the problem, the team at Williamson Employment Services of St. Joseph has announced plans to donate scholarship money each year specifically targeted to those engaged in the study of the skilled trades.

Judee Hopwood is President of Williamson Employment Services, Inc. headquartered on Hilltop Road in St. Joseph. She has arranged to donate $4,000 each year in scholarships for Lake Michigan College students studying skilled trades.

Six students each semester will receive the Williamson Employment Services Skilled Trades Scholarship. Williamson aims to help provide critical financial support for students while boosting the number of skilled professionals to fill open career opportunities in the area’s thriving advanced manufacturing industry.

Hopwood says today, “We are delighted to announce this scholarship.” She adds, “In a tangible way, it demonstrates our commitment to vital business partnerships and long-lasting strategic alliances. The scholarship will promote training opportunities for individuals to build successful careers and will keep our local people working locally. Placing People First . . . it’s what we do.”

Students must reside in the LMC service area, and may be full- or part-time. They must be accepted into the college, and enrolled in a skilled trades short-term training, certificate or associate’s degree program. In announcing the new scholarship offer, Hopwood says, “This reflects Williamson’s awareness of the important role skilled trades education plays in our local economy. The Williamson Employment Services Skilled Trades Scholarship is designed to help both those seeking short-term manufacturing certificates, and those completing their second year of the associates’ degree skilled trades program, in times when many students struggle financially.”
