You never know what you're going to see when you travel Interstate-94, as many of us know only too well. Imagine the horrendous surprise, however, that greeted a patrolling Van Buren County Sheriff's Deputy shortly before 3:30 this afternoon when he saw an airborne pick-up truck soaring at him like an inbound missile strike.

That's what happened in Lawrence Township near MileMarker 49 at 3:20 this afternoon. Paw Paw State Police Troopers were dispatched to the scene when radioed by the Sheriff's Deputy who had to take hard evasive action, crashing his patrol car into a ditch to avoid the incoming pick-up driven by a 73-year old Kentucky man.

That Kentucky driver was headed westbound on I-94 when he lost control of his vehicle for some unknown reason and cross the median. The truck became airborne and was headed into traffic in the eastbound lanes, with the deputy narrowly missing impact by diverting into the roadside ditch. Both men were taken to Bronson Hospital for treatment. The Deputy was released a short while later, however the Kentucky man is listed in critical condition from his own injuries.

State Police Lt. Dale Hinz says that the crash remains under investigation and notes that lane closures were present on I-94 as a result of the crash for more than two hours. All travel lanes are back open at this time, however.

Troopers were assisted on the scene by the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, Hartford Police Department, Pokagon Tribal Police, Lawrence Fire Department, Hartford Fire Department, and Van Buren Emergency Medical Services.
