That lost feeling in the pit of your stomach that accompanies a life changing moment like this morning's announcement regarding the projected permanent shutdown of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant at Covert can be more than gut-wrenching. It can be psychologically devastating if you don't have the support systems to get you through the impending loss of a long time or even lifetime job. Fortunately for Entergy workers employed at the plant, help is on the way.

Both Van Buren County and Kinexus announced today that they will be helping the county and its residents with the Palisades transition. Kinexus will address the economic impact and leverage all available resources across the region.

In June, it was formally announced that Kinexus had assumed the economic development activities throughout Van Buren County, and that is an agreement that is focused on leveraging the services provided through their economic, workforce, and community business units.

Zach Morris, who was named as Kinexus Economic Development Consultant for Van Buren County says, “The partnership between Van Buren County Economic Development Corporation and Kinexus is key in this transition because it integrates the workforce talent pipeline with economic development.” Morris adds, “We will have a holistic approach by bringing the right people to the table to ensure workforce needs are met inclusive of employment, retraining, and access to other resources.”

As the lead workforce intermediary, Kinexus is addressing talent transition needs through the development of a Joint Adjustment committee. Joint Adjustment Committees are comprised of company and worker representatives along with key community partners. These committees have a coordinated approach that is vital to both the community and the company that is closing.

Richard Godfrey, who serves as Chairman of the Van Buren County Board of Commissioners, noted, “On behalf of the County Board of Commissioners, I am pleased that Kinexus will be guiding our workforce and focusing their efforts on this project.”

Randall Peat, who serves as Chairman of the Van Buren County Economic Development Corporation concurs, saying, “We are fortunate to be in a position with Kinexus to bring the resources needed to help in this transition.”

Kinexus is a nonprofit organization that invests millions in funding each year in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren counties through integrated business, workforce, and community development.
