Kozminski Revitalizes Quality Deer Managment

With firearm deer season literally at hand — beginning Tuesday, November 15th — Ken Kozminski, a prolific hunter in virtually every regard, is talking about a renewed effort at establishing the Quality Deer Management Co-Op that he originally founded nearly a dozen years ago. The group is dedicated to allowing young bucks to age into amazing lives and keep them from being gunned down at a far too early age.

Kozminski, who owns & operates The Buck Burgers and Brew in downtown St. Joseph, tells me that as a precursor to opening day of the firearm deer season in the great state of Michigan, he and others in the Sodus and Eau Claire region are working to drum up support for the Co-Op that they originally formed in 2005, and are now in the process of revitalizing with the help of local residents and neighbors who are actively stepping up into management roles.

The Pipestone Creek QDM Co-Op is comprised of like-minded landowners, neighbors and hunters working together to improve the quality of the deer herd and hunting experiences in the neighborhood. Their vision includes working together to create world-class deer management and deer hunting in the region, with an emphasis on the local area.

Kozminski who originally founded the Co-Op with the help from the Quality Deer Management Association and a few dedicated deer managers throughout the state, tells me that many areas in Michigan have been practicing these principles of deer management for decades now. Our region has been "behind the times" a bit but we have the opportunity to quickly catch up.

There are no written rules for the co-op and it is free to join in. Sharing information is a key cornerstone for this initiative and co-op members who join have the chance to garner valuable information and gain new friendships with fellow "like minded" deer hunters and deer managers.

Common interests of members include working to improve the balance of the deer herd, buck-to-doe ratios, overall herd density, managing crop damage, decreasing deer car accidents, increasing the overall age structure of bucks and trespassing related issues. The group also partners with the Michigan DNR by hosting deer check-in stations, previously common throughout the state, but now limited dramatically due to funding.

In fact, on Tuesday, November 15th, from noon until 6pm, DNR representatives will be hosting a DNR deer check-in station at Clear Water Meats at 5976 on Old Pipestone road in Eau Claire. Clear Water Meats will also be hosting a "buck pole" that day. After dusk, awards will be given out for the heaviest deer weighed in for both adults and juniors (16 and under).  Call 269-208-4970 for more information or just show up on November 15th and enjoy the festivities.

If you would like to be a part of this free, fun and progressive QDM co-op, you can contact members who are listed in the flyer inside Saturday's Mailmax (mailed to all residents in Eau Claire and Sodus) or reach out to them through their Facebook page, Pipestone Creek QDM.
