New Owners for Former Von Tobel Building

Within hours of the removal of the "for sale" signs on the sprawling former Von Tobel Lumber & Hardware Store along Glenlord Road in Stevensville, Todd Berndt was busy working to dismantle temporary walls in the showroom looking out across the parking lot to the neighboring Santaniello's Restaurant.

That was in mid-January, and Berndt and one other co-worker have been working every day to prep the building for their employers, the new owners of the building at 2292 W. Glenlord. Eager neighbors and curious passersby were hopeful that the building would be re-purposed as another home center or a retail shop of some sort, but reality is that the building is now home to a logistics company.

The former Von Tobel building is now a trucking terminal and warehouse for DES-CLAW Logistics, based in Sterling Heights, Michigan and an affiliate company to both JVIS, which has two manufacturing facilities for the auto industry in Benton Harbor, and Mayco International, also headquartered in Sterling Heights.

DES-CLAW is a full service, asset based logistics company with multiple services. They are marketing their new Stevensville facility as one offering easy and close on-off access to I-94 and offering  support to hours-of-service (HOS) issues for freight moving west, in particular to the Chicago area. They will also consider cross-docking or consolidation of freight for customers.

Berndt says the company hauls parts for Chrysler generally, but also some other general commodities. His new operation on Glenlord Road just off of Red Arrow Highway offers several services including:

  • Transportation (local, regional and long haul) truckload, dedicated delivery, heavy haul and specialized freight
  • Warehousing and order fulfillment
  • Assembly, sequencing and kitting
  • Rework and sorting
  • Cross Dock & Consolidation
  • and many other service capabilities…

DES-CLAW is minority owned, headed up by President & CEO Faye Caballero, who proudly promotes female minority owned suppliers. She herself was an immigrant who arrived in Detroit from the Phillipines in the winter of 1973 with no coat or boots, and just $8.30 in her pocket. She says she had to wait three years before she could afford to buy her first car which was an old, beat-up Impala that cost her $1,200. The initials DES stand for Diversity Enterprise Solutions.

Caballero spent 20 years with Ford Motor Company and later served as President of Black River Plastics, a Detroit-based, tier-one automotive supplier. She was tabbed by Crain's Automotive News as one of the "Top 100 Leading Women in American Automotive," and by the Detroit News as "One of the Most Influential Women in the Automotive Industry."

DES-CLAW is currently hiring Class A CDL Truck Drivers at their Stevensville location and you can learn more about that by clicking this link: http://clawlogistics.com/employment/
