A major industrial accident Wednesday afternoon has claimed the life of a machine operator at a Cass County plastics manufacturer. Edwardsburg Police were called to the scene at Duo-Form Plastics on Kraus Road in that community at mid-afternoon following reports that the 32-year old machine operator was accidentally crushed in a machine press at the factory.

The 41-year old plastics manufacturer is a certified heavy-gauge plastic thermoformer, creating products for the automotive and housing markets as well as others needing large plastic panels.

The unidentified worker was reportedly killed instantly in the accident around 3pm, and police and fire crews responded along with a med-evac helicopter. There was no immediate indication as to how the man became trapped in the press. Company officials posted a brief message on their Facebook fan page following the incident. This was that message:

All of us at Duo-Form are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and co-worker. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends during this most difficult time.

They also perform custom work for anyone needing the capabilities of their widespread expertise.

There are more than 15 thermoformers in the modern, 190,000 square foot facility at 69836 Kraus Road in Edwardsburg.

The victim in yesterday's accident remains unidentified as family members are notified of the tragic death on Wednesday afternoon. Authorities say that investigations are underway to determine why safety equipment designed to prevent such an accident failed to prevent the tragedy.
