One of the toughest things for Mother Nature to ever remediate is the dumping of old tires. Even after years of sitting out in the elements, they simply don't break down to the degree that many other things do, creating a scourge on the environment if simply dropped into a ravine, a back yard, a barn or wherever.
Fortunately, there have been great changes in recent years in the recycling of old tires into usable products from park benches to playground "mulch" and many other options. If you have old tires sitting around taking up space in your garage, barn, side yard, or wherever, you can get them safely cared for through recycling thanks to Berrien County's Residential Recycling Collection next month.
Jill Adams, Environmental Property Manager for Berrien County's Parks & Recreation Department, would love to have your old tires in a recycling collection on Thursday, May 12th from 3pm to 7pm and Friday, May 13th, from 8:30am until 11am at the Berrien County Road Commission offices at the corner of Napier & Yore Avenues across from Lake Michigan College's Napier Campus in Benton Charter Township.
There is a recycling fee of $1-per passenger tire and $2-per passenger tire still on the rim. You can also rid your yard of semi-truck tires at $5-per tire and $10 for oversize and/or loader-sized tires. The collection next month is being coordinated by Jill's team at the Parks Department and is open to Berrien County residents only.
