Van Buren County voters overwhelmingly supported a plan developed last spring by the Board of Directors of the South Haven Health System which makes the local hospital a part of the Bronson Healthcare system. In fact, of the more than 10,000 votes case in Tuesday’s election on the issue, 89-percent of them gave a huge thumbs up to the deal. That paves the way for a first of the year changeover creating the new Bronson South Haven Hospital.

Launched by the SHHS board of trustees nearly a year ago, the search for a long-term healthcare partner began with a formal request for proposal issued in January 2016. Several organizations that submitted proposals were interviewed, and in April, the board announced its choice of Bronson Healthcare.
In August, the two organizations reached a formal agreement to affiliate. Approval for the plan, however, required a majority vote of area residents to dissolve the Hospital Authority governance structure and allow the transfer to take place. SHHS launched a public education campaign, and voters were presented on Tuesday with a ballot question that was approved by a wide margin.

The South Haven Health System includes not only the 65-bed community hospital in South Haven, but also an urgent care clinic, a medical office building, a wellness & rehab center and a primary care office in the community of Bangor.
The transition formally takes effect on January 1, 2017 when South Haven Health Service will officially become Bronson South Haven.
