When you are running for your life, there are enough barriers to getting to safety. The team at StorSmart Moving & Storage of Southwest Michigan want to make certain that actually making the move is not one of those barriers. StorSmart has partnered with Safe Shelter for Domestic Violence to offer free self-storage and free moving services to people who have been negatively impacted by domestic violence in Berrien County.

Gil Logan is Co-Owner of StorSmart Moving & Storage. he tells me that his team is offering "free moving and storage resources for survivors who are preparing to leave a domestic violence situation." He says, "We hope this service removes one of the barriers of getting to a safe environment."

Safe Shelter provides a secure, violence free environment for survivors of intimate partner domestic violence and sexual assault along with their dependent children. Survivors are offered a protective, warm and violence free place to stay, listening ears, support group, and other resources needed to develop safe, healthy and meaningful lives for themselves and their children.

Through StorSmart's partnership with Safe Shelter, survivors can expect professional movers to handle the packing, loading, transportation, and unloading of their items, as well as a safe, clean storage unit to protect their belongings during their relocation period. Survivors can also take advantage of a free StorSmart Rental Truck, and recycled boxes at no charge when available.

Rachel Kimbrell is Supervisor of Safe Shelter. She responded to StorSmart's offer saying, "We are so grateful for this partnership with our friends at StorSmart." She added, "There are so many barriers that prevent survivors from beginning a new life away from domestic violence and this partnership helps remove one of the major concerns for those we serve."

The public is also invited to help in this partnership effort. Instead of discarding reusable boxes and bins, StorSmart encourages local residents to drop them off at the nearest StorSmart location, allowing other people to use them, especially survivors of domestic violence.

StorSmart was established in 2004 and has more than 150,000 square feet of storage space in multiple locations throughout Berrien County. The company also offers supplies to help with move preparations, such as boxes, tape, packing paper and bubble wrap.
