United Way of Southwest Michigan is all about people helping people, and nowhere is that more evident than during the annual fall campaign for the Day of Action for Seniors. Corporate teams, small business crews, couples, families and even individuals are being sought by the United Way team for this fall's 6th Annual Day of Action coming next month.

United Way of Southwest Michigan is looking for volunteers on November 3, 2016 to venture into the community and help local senior citizens winterize their homes during the 6th Annual Day of Action for seniors.

Those volunteers will rake leaves, clean gutters and check smoke alarms for seniors. Berrien and Cass County seniors (60+) who are physically unable to do the work and cannot afford to pay for this type of service are encouraged to call (269) 982-1700 ext. 32 in order to be placed on the list to potentially have the services rendered for them.

United Way President Anna Murphy points out, “It’s very tough for many people in our community to winterize their homes, and this gives us one day to make a big difference.”

All services are free of charge to the recipient and on a first-come, first-served basis. United Way hopes to serve more than 200 seniors this year, but that number is dependent on the number of volunteers who are successfully recruited to do the work.

Volunteers have the opportunity to help out in their local community, and can volunteer for a half-day or a full-day. Volunteers who work full days will receive a Pizza Hut lunch voucher, and all volunteers will receive a United Way t-shirt for participating. United Way is asking volunteers to bring rakes, work gloves, leaf blowers, and ladders, if available. United Way will supply leaf bags and other necessities to help get the work done.

Anna Murphy is gratified by the performance over the years, saying, “We receive so much support for this event. It’s great to see the local businesses that donate supplies and other businesses that send teams of volunteers to help out. We love seeing the community come together to help.”

United Way of Southwest Michigan improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities to advance the common good. Improving lives happens through advancing the building blocks of a good life; Education, Income, Health, and Basic Needs. Everyone wins when a child succeeds in school, when families are financially stable, when people are healthy and have all their basic needs met. It takes everyone in the community working together to create a brighter future. United Way invites the community to be a part of the change. That’s what it means to LIVE UNITED.
