Just a shade under two years ago I told you of the renewed success of Stevensville entrepreneur Mike Welch and his new role as President of Magnate Worldwide, an Oakbrook, Illinois-based firm engaged in the transportation and logistics business that he has become a world-class expert in. Now, it's like he's coming full circle, bringing a unit of Magnate Worldwide to a new headquarters building in downtown Benton Harbor.

The new Cross-Border Solutions unit of Magnate Worldwide will employee about ten new employees within the next 12 to 18 months, once they establish their new operations in mid-January.

Welch was the President & Founder of Express-1 of Niles and St. Joseph, a logistics firm that started in 1989 with two trucks and the determination to become the best freight expediter in the nation. His leadership at the helm of the North American start-up ground expediter led to unparalleled 15-to-20-percent growth year over year as he grew the business into a $25-million powerhouse in the logistics industry.

In 2004 Welch successfully orchestrated the sale of the company to Segmentz and stayed on as company President for another year before changing the name to Express-1 Expedited Solutions or simply XPO. Between 2005 and 2011 as CEO at XPO, Mike led the firm to multiple key acquisitions of a number of smaller logistics firms, and started a new one called Bounce Logistics. During that span the company grew from $40-million in revenues to in excess of $177-million, greatly enhancing the shareholder value of the publicly owned company. In 2011 he successfully negotiated the sale of XPO to a private equity firm, Jacobs Private Equity.

Mike later became a partner in the Chicago-based investment firm of Magnate Capital Partners. Now, he is bringing a component of the premium asset-light logistics company Magnate Worldwide (MWW) to a base of operations in the Saranac Building on Main Street in Benton Harbor. Welch has announced that his firm will now offer shipments via ground, air, and heavy-haul solutions to and from Mexico. He says the service is yet another example of MWW's commitment to unparalleled customer service. The new charter-avoidance solution will leverage air and ground alternatives to move freight as quickly and cost-effectively as possible for shippers.

Kyle Plummer is Director of Cross-Border Solutions for Magnate. He says, "While our competitors may only consider shipping via ground to reach Mexico, Magnate uncovers more complex, multimodal solutions to get the freight there more quickly and often at a better value."

Mike Welch says the time is right for MWW to add this new service line. He says, "Mexico is the fastest growing market in North America." He adds, "With Kyle and Keith Avery, our Operations Manager, both recently joining us, we have the right people in place to build this service line for us. They're both industry veterans with combined experience of 32 years."

The new service line will operate out of Benton Harbor, and services will be available to MWW's clients as well as those of its subsidiaries TrumpCard, a California-based provider of mission-critical air freight and ground shipping, and Somerset Marine Lines (SML), which provides international freight forwarding, including project cargo, from its New Jersey offices. Clients who choose the new multi-modal service to Mexico will enjoy the same exceptional customer service that MWW and its subsidiaries have become known for, such as 24-hour customer service and a proprietary technology platforms that enable clients to track their shipments in real time.

Welch says, "We're eager to work with shippers of all sizes," and ads, "With our deep industry experience, we can provide step-by-step consulting to integrate and optimize supply chains."

With a strong capital position, seasoned management team, and skilled operational and customer service talent, Magnate Worldwide (MWW) is building a premium transportation and logistics provider. MWW focuses on asset-light premium logistics and seeks to partner with best-in-class companies that operate in the international freight forwarding and North American premium transportation markets.
