Five Years In, SJ’s CrossFit Tides Plans Two New Markets

A small rag-tag group of athletes gathered together five years ago with little more than “five used bars, a stack of plates a couple of feet high, and essentially a small 10-foot rig with zero members.” This weekend, that core group which became CrossFit Tides of St. Joseph celebrated their 5th Anniversary in business and announced plans to expand dramatically over the next year into two new markets as well.

CrossFit Tides, located at 622 Langley Avenue in St. Joseph, first opened their doors in 2012, the first local CrossFit affiliate anywhere in the region, and now — five years later — they are home to more than 130 athletes in the community, with plans to expand into both South Haven and Kalamazoo in the coming year.

Owned and operated by Brian and Emily Campbell, CrossFit Tides has become a fan favorite for local athletes not only because of the expertise of their coaches, but because of the community they have become a part of. As CrossFit Tides member Brian Streu said Saturday, “It’s one of the best communities I’ve ever been a part of!”

The Campbells are hopeful that affinity will prevail in the coming year as well as they partner to open those two new locations in South Haven and Kalamazoo, with a target for opening each location on April 1, 2018.

As a result of that planned exponential expansion, the team at CrossFit Tides will soon be looking for qualified and passionate individuals to become a part of the team in both new locations.

Brian Campbell told the happy crowd of CrossFit Tides members yesterday during the 5th Anniversary Celebration, “It’s about having people be able to play with their grandchildren when they get older, it’s about having a personal experience every single time that you walk in through the doors here and feeling loved.”

In addition to being the first CrossFit gym in Berrien County five years ago, it was the most experienced facility in the area, sporting some 5,300 square feet of usable space complete with showers and locker rooms available to members there.

CrossFit is the principal strength and conditioning program for many interested in a healthier life. The CrossFit program is designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. At CrossFit Tides, they’ve used the same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease as they do with cage fighters who are one month out from televised bouts. They scale load and intensity; they don’t change programs.
