Lawton’s Nesbitt to Head the Michigan Lottery

Being term-limited out of the Michigan Legislature has just proven to be fairly decent jackpot for former State Representative Aric Nesbitt of Lawton. Gov. Rick Snyder has announced the appointment of Nesbitt as Michigan Lottery Commissioner…a move that will increase Nesbitt’s paycheck by some 75-percent.

The lottery commissioner is responsible for the overall management and operation of the bureau, including development of long-range plans, formulation of policy, assuring the accountability and integrity of the lottery, and establishing and maintaining contact with state legislators to research, evaluate, and gauge the impact of lottery-related legislation.

As a State Rep Nesbitt earned $82,425 in his most recent, and final, term in office. His new pay rate leaps to $145,000 as head of the Michigan Lottery.

Gov. Snyder thanked Nesbitt for his continued service to Michigan, saying, “He has served many years in public service and I am confident that experience will suit him well in this role.”

Nesbitt served three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives. He previously served as Legislative Director for Congressman Tim Murphy and Congressman Tim Walberg. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Hillsdale College and a master’s in economics and business administration from the Norwegian School of Economics. He will replace M. Scott Bowen.

His term is effective beginning today, Sunday, February, 19, 2017 and he will serve at the pleasure of the Governor. His appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Michigan Senate.

Nesbitt’s appointment follows by a couple of weeks the assignment by Snyder of former State Representative Al Pscholka of Stevensville as the new State Budget Director. Both Pscholka and Nesbitt had been term limited and were looking for new employment when the Governor came calling.
