Motorcyclist Dies in Collision with Electrical Utility Truck Restoring Power Outage

A pre-dawn tragedy has claimed the life of a Petoskey motorcyclist after he crashed into the rear-end of a Consumers Energy utility truck northeast of Paw Paw while linesmen were working to restore power to that neighborhood.

Paw Paw State Police Lt. Dale Hinz says that the Consumers Energy truck was parked in the northbound lane of Douglas Avenue in Cooper Township of Kalamazoo County with strobing or oscillating emergency lights activated when a 44-year old man from Petoskey who was also northbound around 5:15 this morning when he slammed into the utility truck and was killed in the collision. No utility workers involved in the restoration efforts were injured in the incident.

State Police say that witnesses to the crash confirmed that the utility truck’s emergency lights were activated when the accident took place along Douglas Avenue just north of B Avenue, where the power was out due to strong winds that had impacted service.

The crash remains under investigation and Lt. Hinz says the motorcyclist’s name is being withheld pending family notifications. Michigan State Police were assisted on the scene by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office and the Cooper Township Fire Department.
