Getting Fit 4 Fall

With the arrival of every new season hope springs eternal.  Locally organizers from LECO held high hopes for their 2nd Annual Fit 4 Fall 5K Run/Walk conducted recently at Riverview Park in St. Joseph.  Those hopes were certainly not dashed on the rocks as they report charitable proceeds from the event topped $9,000.00.

More than 400 runners, walkers, volunteers, and spectators turned out for the race on Saturday, October 5th.  LECO, as presenting sponsor, joined 53 additional sponsors who helped off-set the costs through both monetary sponsorships and in-kind donations.  On top of that many other local businesses contributed to a silent auction held in conjunction with the event, featuring over 50 packages of products and services.

The $9,000.00 raised from registration fees and the auction is being divided equally among Hospice at Home, the Wounded Warrior Project, and the Sonya Ansari Center for Autism in Southwest Michigan.  The race was launched a year ago as an extension of LECO's employee wellness program.  While the race was initially intended solely for LECO employees and their friends and family members, this year's event was thrown open to public participation as well.

Maria Hutchins, the Event Director says, "It's been wonderful to see the Fit 4 Fall 5K grow to become an event for the entire community, with so many people and businesses stepping up to help raise funds for three great organizations."

Top finishers in the run portion of the event were Christopher Hoover of Berrien Center and Carissa Laack of St. Joseph.  Overall winners for the walk were Mindy Flowers-Daisy of St. Joseph and Steve Roeder of Stevensville.  A complete lis of winners by age division has been posted at www.fit4fall5k.com

The 3rd Annual race has been slated for next October, and registration forms and other information will be posted at the website by June of 2014.
