Will Aldi Build in SH Township?

The new Meijer store coming to South Haven isn't even open yet, but might have additional competition on its heels.  The South Haven Township Planning Commission is expected this week to take a look at a site plan for a more than 17,000 square foot Aldi grocery chain store off of 73rd Street south of Phoenix Road.

The discount grocer, which has a presence in Benton Charter Township on the periphery of the Orchards Mall along Pipestone Road, is seeking approval for the site measuring just under 4-acres according to South Haven Township officials.  The grocer would have parking spaces for up to 85 vehicles on the site which had most recently been used as a sales site for a modular home business.  Word is that Aldi has an option to buy the property if the site plan garners approval.  The planning commission will likely take the issue up at its November 6, 2013 meeting.

Progress continues, meanwhile, on the new Meijer store that will sit astride the the common border between the city of South Haven and South Haven Township along the northern edge of Phoenix Road.
