Get Ready for Ray's on the Green

For two years now, Ray Mays and Dave Vonk have been noodling over how best to capitalize on what they contend is arguably one of the best views in Michigan's Great Southwest,  Now that the planning and negotiations are complete, renovation work will get underway to transform a major portion of the Berrien Hills Golf Club's sizable clubhouse overlooking the St. Joseph River into a new casual restaurant coming next spring.

Ray's on the Green will be the formal name of the new full-service bar & restaurant when it tees off next spring.  Ray is not leaving the Friendly Tavern in Coloma in any manner, he's simply expanding his empire into a space that he has been dreaming about for quite some time.

The target for opening of the new eatery is by April 1st of next year, and those who are familiar with Ray's successes originally as a partner in the former Pumphouse Grille in downtown St. Joseph and for a number of years now at the Friendly, look for similar quality food and service as you have come to expect from his other venues.

The restaurant will feature great steaks, burgers, sandwiches, pasta dishes, seafood, and Mexican offerings much like you would find at his property in Coloma.  The bar will be a full-service bar with beers on tap, wines and spirits for cocktails.  Ray's on the Green will include full menu al fresco dining on the deck overlooking the pool and several fairways as well as a smaller patio on the lower level outside of what had been known for years as the Grill Room.  Ray promises to be a truly one-stop-shopping opportunity for business meetings and events, weddings, parties and the like inasmuch as a large part of the main ballroom overlooking the St. Joseph River willl be available for such functions.  His kitchens will be capable of handling catering for such events as well.

The existing bar area alongside the Pro Shop will undergo a makeover this winter including new carpeting, fresh paint and other fine cosmetic changes.  The same goes for the lower level Grill Room.  The ballroom has a standard capacity of around 200 people for special events, and Ray's on the Green will be capable of handling from 130 to 150 diners at any one time.

Mays is leasing space in the clubhouse for his new venture and tells me he will employ 40 or more full and part time people in the restaurant operation.

Look for regular live entertainment on the patio during the outdoor weather season.

Mays, who is a veteran restaurateur promises reasonably priced and outstanding quality food at Ray's on the Green which will be open to the general public from 11am until 11pm seven days a week for lunch and dinner service.  He promises it will become a regular go-to option for hungry people across the region, not simply a "grab some lunch when you golf, " or some sort of "exclusively for special occasions" type of spot.  Just like the Pumphouse and the Friendly have built a regular and loyal clientele, Ray expects to see your smiling face routinely once things are up and runnning.

Best of all, says Ray...everybody will be able to find lots of on-site parking right outside the door in the club's spacious parking lot.

Stay tuned for more as opening day draws closer for the all new, up and coming Ray's on the Green at Berrien Hills Golf Club located on Napier at the River in St. Joseph.
