Pizzeria Ceases Operations

To friends and family members, it was likely not a major surprise, however the good people who have owned and operated Passero's Pizzeria in St. Joseph have announced to the world today that they have tossed their last crust.

Mario & Melanie Abbott released the news to customers and fans on their Facebook page this morning that they are now officially closed for business. The couple had sustained considerable health issues in recent months and decided that life is too short to keep battling in the marketplace at a time when they would like to experience their kids while they are still young.

The restaurant, located at 2108 S. Cleveland Avenue alongside Family Video and across from Martin's Super Market, had been a popular stop for many pizza fans in the region. Here is the statement that the Abbotts shared this morning:

It's with mixed emotions that we tell you, our loyal customers, that as of today, April 22, 2014, Passeros Pizzeria will be closed for business. We know many people will be speculating on why, and that's why we wanted to let you know our reasons. We have some health concerns, that have worried us, and our kids are growing up so fast, that we want to be able to spend more time with them, and enjoy them while they are still young. We have learned so much, and made so many new friends, from having this great establishment. And that's part of the sadness for us. On the other hand, we've had some great opportunities come up, and are excited where the future will take us!! We assume that there will be questions about the space itself. As of right now, no one is moving in that we know of, but the equipment is spoken for. Thank you all for the loyalty, and love that you've showed us!! We appreciate you very much!

There was sadness and understanding combined in the early responses to the Facebook post, many claiming Passero's as their favorite pizza of all.  The Abbott family owned the restaurant and operated it for about two and a half years as a family-run operation featuring made from scratch recipes, including sandwiches made on homemade sourdough bread.
