Music -- The Dance of Life

In 1924 Charles Tremaine began what has become an annual observance of National Music Week as presented by the National Federation of Music Clubs. That organization, which came into existence in 1898, has grown into one of the world's largest music organizations with club and individual members of all ages. It was chartered by the U.S. Congress and is the only music organization that is a member of the United Nations.

Ever since Mr. Tremaine's declaration some 91 years ago, National Music Week occurs each year during the first complete week in May, running Sunday through Sunday. Music has played an important role in history, exerting a leading influence on our everyday lives. It has become a powerful means to deepen our worship, express patriotic fervor, and add a joyous atmosphere to happy occasions.

This year's observance of National Music Week runs from Sunday, May 4th through May 11th and is being sponsored here in Michigan's Great Southwest by not only The National Federation of Music Clubs, but also by Monday Musical Club of Southwestern Michigan, Inc. The 2014 theme for National Music Week is "Music -- The Dance of Life."

The local program, which is open to the general public, will take place at 2pm, Monday, May 5th, in the Shepherd Hall of The Heritage Center on Main Street in St. Joseph. Co-Chairs for the event are Carol Kent and Emily Strayhorn. The program, "The Merry Month of May," will feature May Inspirations by Carol Kent, Dulcimers on theh Bluff by Becky Buford, and The Reveliers featuring an A cappella Quartet. Colors of the day are Pink & Lilac and the Reception Committee is comprised of Diana Kamp, Marion Manthe and Mary Ann Stogkwell. Lucy Ann DeVries is serving as the Social Tea Chair for the day.

Sandra Nye is President of Monday Musical Club of SWM, a position she has held for four years now. The club enjoys a membership of 192 music lovers in all areas of the arts. The club sponsors two Student Clubs, Junior & Senior with Laurie Marshall as Director. Monthly meetings are held at The Whitcomb in St. Joseph from September through April.

Anyone interested in joining Monday Musical should contact Membership Chair Vivian Oberhue at 269-428-2625.
