American Kitchen Return Highly Unlikely

Fans of the recently closed American Kitchen on Red Arrow Highway should probably not be holding their breath waiting for "a possible return in a new location." In fact, new evidence would suggest that the demise of the diner may not have come at the hands of "challenges presented by...electrical to plumbing and everything in between," after all. The owner of the restaurant, Angela Bayliss posted to Facebook on April 24th that the establishment had served its last meal on Monday, April 21st. She cited "issues beyond our control," and proclaimed "hope we can resurface in a more acceptable location in the future."

Meanwhile, a Craigslist offering "posted 23 days ago" according to that site today bears the headline: The American Kitchen Restaurant/Assets for Sale (St. Joseph, MI). That would mean that the listing was originally posted on or near April 7, 2014. That listing (which also shows it was updated 3 days ago) says flatly, "Business recently closed its doors due to lack of staffing and ownership has relocated to another state."

Here is what the complete Craigslist offer said as of 2pm this afternoon, Wednesday, April 30, 2014:

"New business started in late 2012 has developed a strong local following for breakfast and lunch service. Business is located on a road with great traffic count and has a fantastic landlord doing everything reasonable to help the business. The location has great parking and visibility and seats 75 as configured but could support up to 90 or more. Since we have been open the public has embraced us and our online reviews are some of the best in the area. 80% of the sales are to loyal repeat customers who rave about our high quality meals.

Year one revenue was strong with the future outlook expected to significantly increase as more customers discover the business and as other aspects of the business grow. Catering and delivery are two drivers for future expansion and the foundation as been set for both. Local businesses are aware of the restaurant and have expressed interest in getting delivery menus and service established. Over a dozen catering events have been contracted with customers ranging from local business, township meetings, wedding showers, rehearsal dinners and even a baby shower. Catering has been targeted in the past 6 months and with our solid developing reputation a future owner can reap significant rewards.

This opportunity is ideal for an owner operator who has passion for great food experiences. Business recently closed its doors due to lack of staffing and ownership has relocated to another state.

Sale includes all equipment and some inventory, goodwill, name and website. A few of the included equipment items are: walk in cooler, 15' of hood system with makeup air, 30Q Hobart mixer, 10 burner stove, dual convection oven, ice machine, 3 compartment sink, booths, chairs and tables and many more items.

Owners would consider selling just assets.

Do NOT contact me with unsolicited services or offers."

If the assets are sold off, there's not likely much chance that the restaurant will relocate to another site locally going forward. Nevertheless I will keep you posted on any additional updates.
