How to Develop & Become a Leader

When you're a professional engaged in the realm of Human Resource Management, leadership rapidly becomes the gold standard for success. With that in mind, a local group of HR managers and experts will gather shortly after the New Year to help promote the development of new leaders in a half-day summit for business professionals at Western Michigan University Southwest.

Joan Walters of JR Walter Resources, an executive search firm in St. Joseph is also a member of the Human Resources Council of Southwestern Michigan. She tells me that on Wednesday, January 18th from noon until 4:30pm her group and several sponsors will feature their half-day seminar on Leadership: How to Develop Leaders, How to Become One.

During the half-day event which includes a registration and lunch period from noon until 1pm, three key facilitators will take to the stage to address the leadership theme, all for a single cost of $25.00 which can be submitted by PayPal on the organization's website or can be paid at the door. Organizers anticipate three certification credits will be offered by the event.

Underwritten in part by the sponsorships of the Cornerstone Chamber of Commerce and the South Haven Area Chamber of Commerce as well as Western Michigan University Southwest, the leadership seminar will feature three speakers from a diverse background.

The event will open out with Mike Pachuta, an entrepreneur and change agent for a number of businesses, non-profit institutions, and professional organizations. Mike is President of Credential Check Corporation, a global provider of workforce screening services to corporations and financial institutions. He is also Vice President of Summit Group Holdings, an investment and management firm. He will address how to mentor and be mentored, as well as lessons he's learned during his career.

Colonel Mac Case is next up, having served more than 25 years with the U.S. Armed Forces, and a graduate of West Point. He will discuss Military Leadership Principles and their application in the civilian workplace. Col. Case is a dynamic speaker and a true American hero.

Wrapping the day will be local super-star Leslie Pickell, who has enjoyed a spectacular career in leadership and entrepreneurship. She will offer up invaluable tips and address the impact a psychological contract between employers and employees can have in individual organizations, an discuss how HR can strengthen those bonds with the workforce. She is also the Program Director for the local Leadership Accelerator Program.

The $25 seminar fee applies to both members and guests, and the luncheon buffet is included in the price. RSVPs are due by the end of the day on Monday, January 16th by e-mail to southwesternmishrm@gmail.com or by clicking the "Meeting Sign-Up" tab on the website below. Any and all cancelations for those signed up but unable to make it must also be registered by January 16th. Western Michigan University Southwest is located on the Napier Avenue Campus of Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor.
