Proos Votes to Override Gubernatorial Veto on Sales Tax on the Difference

Politically speaking, they’re both on the same team, but that didn’t stand in the way of State Senator John Proos’ decision today to vote in favor of a veto override of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder when it comes to “sales tax on the difference” reforms in the Great Lakes State.

The Michigan Senate voted today, Wednesday, January 17th, to override the governor’s veto of Senate Bills 94 and 95 in order to speed up “sales tax on the difference” reform, and assist automobile dealers impacted by the difference from surrounding areas, especially in a border area like here in Michigan’s Great Southwest.

Under the reform, Michigan sales and use taxes would only be applied to the difference between the price of a new car and the value of a trade-in.

After supporting the veto override, Senator Proos issued the following statement:

“We have worked well with the governor to turn around our state and improve our economy, but it was necessary to stand up for Michigan consumers and override the veto of this important reform.”

Proos adds, “The people of Southwest Michigan understand that having Michigan remain the only Great Lakes state that taxes the value of a trade-in during a purchase of a car or truck puts our local businesses at a competitive disadvantage and costs Michigan consumers more in taxes.”

He concludes, “I supported taking the historic step of overriding a governor’s veto because this reform is needed to help consumers save money and enable local auto dealers to better compete with Indiana sellers.”
