Rio’s Mexican Grill Has Left the Building

If you missed your Rio’s Taco Tuesday fix, the party’s over. Economic pressures have forced owners of the popular Mexican restaurant in Stevensville to cease operations effective immediately. Yesterday, Taco Tuesday, was the final day of operations and a rental van was being loaded up behind the bright red building just ahead of the lunch hour today with a simple printed message pasted into the doorway as well as at the drive-up window.

Here is what that message said:

Due to several uncharacteristic expenses over the years with this particular structure, our Stevensville, Michigan location is now permanently closed. We would like to pour our efforts and assets into smaller business models with our same concept. We’ve very much enjoyed serving Stevensville and the surrounding areas and thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for the support over the last several years.

This was one of the most successful runs for Rio’s Mexican Grill in the northern portion of Berrien County thus far. The diner has had a checkered past with considerably shorter stints in downtown St. Joseph, on Main Street in Benton Harbor, and along Red Arrow Highway in Bridgman over the years.

The flagship stores in New Buffalo and Michigan City have been stable since the beginning, and they remain open at this time, but for Stevensville, the ride ended last evening and the party is over.
