On Monday the governor will hand out his Governor’s Service Awards to nearly 50 individuals, organizations and businesses including Whirlpool Corporation. The winners were all selected for their commitment to volunteerism, service or philanthropy. Whirlpool was among the winners in the Corporate Community Leader category, which honors corporations and businesses that excel in community involvement and demonstrate excellent corporate citizenship by giving back to their community. Forty-Nine winners will be honored.

Nominated by United Way of Southwest Michigan, Whirlpool employees in Michigan and the Whirlpool Foundation have contributed more than $24 million to the United Way of Southwest Michigan Campaigns, since 2004. Globally, Whirlpool has impacted over 300 nonprofit organizations through volunteerism and donations and has been a valued partner of United Way of Southwest Michigan for the last 75 years.

Anna Murphy, President of United Way of Southwest Michigan says, “Whirlpool is a global leader in their commitment to making long-lasting impact on people’s lives.” She adds, “We are proud of our long-standing partnership and proud to see that Whirlpool will be recognized with a Governor’s Service Award.”

The Governor’s Service Awards ceremony is an annual statewide recognition event acknowledging the contributions made by Michigan volunteers. The event is coordinated by the Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC), the state’s lead agency on volunteerism. The Governor’s Service Awards winners will be honored during a special ceremony hosted by the Michigan Community Service Commission next Monday, August 21st, at the Detroit Opera House. The event will also commemorate the Michigan Community Service Commission’s 25th anniversary.

In announcing the winners, Governor Snyder said, “These individuals and organizations are role models for other people to follow. The impact they have on other people’s lives is incredible.” The governor adds, “They show us how to overcome obstacles and do good things for other people. They demonstrate tremendous spirit and we are thrilled to recognize them.”

The MCSC strives to engage all Michigan residents in volunteerism to address critical community challenges.
