There was no immediate indication if he owed money to the IRS this year or was getting a refund, but on the eve of Tax Day 2018, an Allegan County man picked up a nice little chunk of change in the Michigan Lottery’s Lucky For Life game. As a result, he’ll be able to spend a little money on himself for a change.

David Marsh, of Plainwell in Allegan County, managed to match the five white balls drawn April 16th – 09-11-26-33-38 – to win the big prize of $25,000 a year for the rest of his life. Marsh is the 20th winner of a Lucky For Life lifetime prize in Michigan.

While picking up his winnings at Lottery headquarters, the 61-year old Marsh says, “I was just stunned when I checked my ticket,” adding, “I raised four kids on my own, and then took care of my aging parents, so I’ve never really had much for myself.”

Marsh is a hard worker, and says, “I work third shift and bought my ticket on the way home from work. While I was at work, I called the Lottery hotline at about 2am to get the numbers. When I saw I matched five of them on my ticket, I called the hotline again to make sure I had written them down right.”

Marsh visited Lottery headquarters today to claim the big prize. He chose to receive his winnings as a one-time lump sum payment of $390,000 rather than annual payments for $25,000 for 20 years or life, whichever is greater.

With his winnings, Marsh plans to buy a new home, share with his family, and then invest the remainder. He tells us, “Winning this means I can relax a little, maybe work part time, and spend more time with my family.”

For just $2 per play, Lucky For Life gives Lottery players a chance to win prizes ranging from $3 to a lifetime of cash. To win the game’s top prize of $1,000 a day for life, players must match all five winning numbers ranging from 1 to 48, plus one Lucky Ball ranging from 1 to 18. Players who match all five winning numbers, but not the Lucky Ball, will win $25,000 a year for life. Lucky For Life drawings take place every Monday and Thursday at 10:35 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at Lottery retailers across the state.

About 97 cents of every dollar spent on Lottery tickets is returned to the state in the form of contributions to the state School Aid Fund, prizes to players and commissions to vendors and retailers. In the 2017 fiscal year, the Lottery’s contribution to Michigan’s public schools was a record $924.1 million. Since it began in 1972, the Lottery has contributed more than $21 billion to support public education in Michigan.
