The Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr Lives on This Week at LMC

Lake Michigan College this week continues a tradition launched nearly two dozen years ago as they once again salute the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, and they invite the general public to a series of free events on the Napier Avenue Campus in Benton Harbor throughout the course of the week ahead.

While the deadline to register for the opening ceremonies of the week at tomorrow morning’s breakfast, there are many other events the public is invited to. Here’s what’s on the docket in the week ahead at LMC:

Breakfast Celebration and Awards Ceremony

LMC will host its 23rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Celebration and Diversity Award ceremony on Monday, January 15, from 7:45 to 10 am in The Mendel Center’s Grand Upton Hall.

This year’s theme is “The Cost of Silence.” The keynote speaker will be Dr. Rufus Glasper, President and CEO of the League for Innovation in the Community College. Other speakers include Congressman Fred Upton; Diversity Consultant Danny Sledge; and LMC students Jamia Timmons and Dyesha Moore. Music will be performed by All God’s Children Community Choir, and LMC students De’Leeshia Hall and Kenneth Jackson. The college will also announce the recipient of its 2018 Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Award.

Movie and Discussion: “Detroit”

On Tuesday, January 16 from noon to 2:30, LMC will present a viewing of “Detroit,” followed by a discussion. The film centers around the Algiers Motel incident in 1967 Detroit during the racially charged 12th Street Riot.

The viewing and discussion will be held in the Brown Lecture Hall, located in D-105 on the lower level of the College’s main academic building. Content may be unsuitable for some audiences.

Privilege Walk and Discussion

On Wednesday, January 17, from noon to 1 pm guests are invited to participate in a Privilege Walk. The event is intended to shed light on how power and privilege affect the lives of everyone. Attendees will meet in the LMC gymnasium, located on the first floor of the main building. Guests are asked to wear athletic shoes or socks to protect the gymnasium floor.

Race Relations Council Forum

On Thursday, January 18, from noon to 2 pm a Race Relations Panel will discuss strategies for promoting racial equality in education. Panelists include Maurice Burton, Beth McCree, Rick Pawloski and Jan Personette.

The forum will be in the Blue Lecture Hall located in the D-Wing on the lower level.

Student Volunteer Activities

LMC students will volunteer on Tuesday and Wednesday to help assemble dried bean soup and rice packets for area food pantries and create tie blankets for area homeless shelters.
