Warm Weather & Flooding Closing Down St. Joe Ice Arena and Other Outdoor Rec Opportunities

Open air sheet ice doesn’t hold up well under mid-60’s temperatures and a steady drumbeat of rain is also taking its toll on outdoor recreational opportunities in the City of St. Joseph today.

We’ve received word that city staff has canceled the Open Skate time at the John and Dede Howard Ice Arena this evening due to the unseasonably warm weather.  They are hopeful that the Howard Ice Arena can reopen tomorrow, but they encourage you to check the city’s website for updated information.

Additionally, the city’s Kiwanis Park is being closed today due to flooding. It is anticipated, based on the forecast for more rain, that Kiwanis may very well be closed again tomorrow, Wednesday, February 21.

Further, city officials are cautioning that the closing of Riverview Park may be forthcoming.  Conditions there are being closely monitored, and with the anticipated forecast of more rain, city staff may be forced to close Riverview at some point either today or tomorrow.

Authorities ask you to make plans to check the city’s website, www.sjcity.com, for updates about openings and closings for the Howard Ice Arena, Kiwanis Park, and Riverview Park.

Flooding in low lying areas all across the region is playing havoc with traditional impact zones that frequently see flooding under conditions such as we’ve been seeing. Police and others caution you to avoid driving into flooded road conditions, especially if you are unfamiliar with the lay of the land. Washouts can occur at any time.
