Whirlpool’s Tech Advancements Earn International Recognition

The Internet of Things has presented Whirlpool Corporation with a multitude of new innovation opportunities as they work to remain cutting edge in the major home appliance industry and the whole concept behind connected products in the home. The resulting work is paying huge dividends for not only the consumer, but for the Benton Harbor-based appliance giant itself.

In recognition of its Whirlpool Cloud Internet of Things Infrastructure Platform Project, Whirlpool Corporation has been named a winner of the 2018 Digital Edge 50 Award from IDG Enterprise and CIO Magazine. The Whirlpool Cloud Project, originally launched in 2016, will allow Whirlpool Corporation to deploy connected products around the globe, delivering advanced appliance features more quickly by reducing digital capability development cycle times.

Mike Heim is Corporate Vice President and Global Chief Information Officer at Whirlpool. He says, “We are honored to be recognized for bringing consumer-focused innovation to our products, simplifying the lives of our customers.” Heim adds, “With a quickly expanding portfolio of connected products, we saw the need for a secure technology platform solution that could keep pace with innovating for what really matters in day-to-day life, allowing consumers to personalize their in-home experience in a way that helps them care for their families. We are proud of this project and the team behind it.”

The Digital Edge 50 Awards, distributed by IDG Enterprise and CIO Magazine, honor companies that have leveraged digital technologies to achieve innovation for their business. Selected by a panel of industry experts and business and technology executives, winners demonstrate greater customer engagement, higher sales conversions and new products, as well as revenue and profit growth.

As the number one major appliance manufacturer in the world, Whirlpool Corporation is focused on innovating to provide better care through smart and connected appliances and services. From leveraging over-the-air automatic updates to microwave ovens that cook based on information provided via the barcode on a packaged food item, the Internet of Things has introduced a new digital dimension to the company’s traditional home care products.

Whirlpool Corporation will be formally honored as a recipient of this award at IDG’s AGENDA18 Conference, taking place March 19-21, 2018 in Miami.

Whirlpool Corporation continues to rein as the number one major appliance manufacturer in the world, with approximately $21 billion in annual sales, 93,000 employees and 70 manufacturing and technology research centers in 2016, and world headquarters on M-63 north of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor.
