Even though it was being touted as one of the most critical elections in many years, the turn out for the 2018 mid-term vote only managed to draw in the mid-forty to mid-sixty percent range in many communities across Michigan’s Great Southwest today, while the City of Benton Harbor clocked in at just 28.4-percent.

Overall, Berrien County finished with a 50.4-percent turnout with 63,213 voters casting ballots.

Here are the preliminary turnout percentages as reported by the Berrien County Election Results site:

  • Bainbridge Township — 63.7-percent (1,322 voters turned out)
  • Baroda Township — 60.1-percent (1,315 voters turned out)
  • Benton Charter Township — 36.7-percent (4,566 voters turned out)
  • Benton Harbor City — 28.4-percent (2,417 voters turned out)
  • Berrien Township — 50.1-percent (1,956 voters turned out)
  • Bertrand Township — 57.4-percent (1,256 voters turned out)
  • Bridgman City — 59.8-percent (1,031 voters turned out)
  • Buchanan City — 46-percent (1,531 voters turned out)
  • Buchanan Township — 47.9-percent (1,285 voters turned out)
  • Chikaming Township — 62.4-percent (1,668 voters turned out)
  • Coloma City — 51.2-percent (588 voters turned out)
  • Coloma Charter Township — 49.6-percent (2,060 voters turned out)
  • Galien Township — 50.9-percent (581 voters turned out)
  • Hagar Township — 55.2-percent (1,496 voters turned out)
  • Lake Charter Township — 60.9-percent (1,578 voters turned out)
  • Lincoln Charter Township — 63.4-percent (7,410 voters turned out)
  • New Buffalo City — 51.8-percent (874 voters turned out)
  • New Buffalo Township — 57.7-percent (1,228 voters turned out)
  • Niles City — 37.2-percent (3,482 voters turned out)
  • Niles Charter Township — 48.1-percent (5,190 voters turned out)
  • Oronoko Charter Township — 51.3-percent (3,013 voters turned out)
  • Pipestone Township — 50.9-percent (878 voters turned out)
  • Royalton Township — 63.4-percent (2,453 voters turned out)
  • St. Joseph City — 60-percent (4,152 voters turned out)
  • St. Joseph Charter Township — 62.2-percent (5,307 voters turned out)
  • Sodus Township — 50.8-percent (910 voters turned out)
  • Three Oaks Township — 49.9-percent (1,152 voters turned out)
  • Watervliet City — 45.9-percent (552 voters turned out)
  • Watervliet Township — 47.1-percent (1,151 voters turned out)
  • Weesaw Township — 50.2-percent (811 voters turned out)

All three ballot proposals won statewide, and Berrien County followed suit. Here are the numbers for each countywide:

  • Proposal 1 to allow recreational marijuana used in Michigan passed in Berrien County with 33,193 yes votes to 28,856 voting no.
  • Proposal 2 which is designed to end gerrymandering in Michigan was passed in Berrien County with 33,932 yes votes to 26,445 voting no.
  • Proposal 3 which handles voting issues such as the return of straight-party ticket voting and access to absentee ballots regardless of the reason passed in Berrien County with 38,627 voting in favor of adoption and 22,506 voting no.

Here are other results from Tuesday’s elections:

  • Berrien Springs Schools Bond Proposal was narrowly approved with 2,286 voting yes and 2,183 voting no.
  • Berrien Township Road Maintenance Bond Proposal was approved with 1,148 voting yes and 732 voting no.
  • Galien Township Library Millage was passed 359 yes to 194 no.
  • Michiana Village Millage Renewal was approved 63 to 40.
  • Pipestone Township Road Maintenance & Repair Proposal was approved 482 to 378.
  • Sodus Township Road Improvements Proposal was approved by a 581 to 298 vote.
  • Weesaw Township Fire Protection Millage was approved 555 to 216.
  • River Valley Schools Sinking Fund Millage was approved by a tally of 2,285 yes votes to 1,734 no.
  • The St. Joseph School Board winners were Kathy Weykamp (4,924 votes), Kerry Wright (4,347 votes) and Brett Wier (4,039 votes) while a separate, uncontested role was won by Rick Dyer (6,937 votes)
  • Coloma Community Schools Operating Millage was approved 2,226 to 1,590.
  • Buchanan City Dial-A-Ride was approved 1,003 to 468.
