$3.4-M Resurfacing Project on M-51 Gets Underway Monday

If your daily commute takes you along M-51 between Berrien and Cass Counties, here’s a heads up for road construction getting underway next week.

The Michigan Department of Transportation will commence at $3.4-million road project on Monday, May 11th to resurface M-51 in the Niles area which is expected to take several months to complete with an estimated end date of Friday, July 24th.

MDOT says the project, which will resurface 11.4-miles of M-51 from Peavine Street on the southwest side of Dowagiac to 9th Street in the City of Niles, will include:

  • Resurfacing of 11.4-miles of pavement
  • Joint repairs
  • Concrete curb and gutter replacement
  • Sidewalk upgrades
  • Sidewalk ramp upgrades

MDOT says that the project is designed to extend the life of the roadway, improve safety, and improve ride quality.

Single-lane closures will take place during the 11-week run of the project with traffic regulators.
