Air Traffic Increases at SBN

The ease of access and increasing new amenities continue to make South Bend International Airport a preferred provider for air travel to the region as witnessed in the uptick in passenger counts at every air carrier on the airfield over the past year. 

Every one of the air carriers represented on the airfield saw increased passenger counts, with Delta Airlines carving out the largest increase at 6.44-percent during 2015.

South Bend International Airport, or simply SBN as it is known through its designation by the Federal Aviation Administration, increased passenger traffic by 4.11-percent overall last year, with 314,300 enplanements, the aviation industry's measure universally used to count the number of people boarding commercial aircraft at the departure airport.

While Delta led the way with its 6.44-percent increase to 142,483 passengers, United Airlines increased traffic by 1.42-percent for 67,197 passengers, Allegiant carried 97,663 for a 1.07-percent increase, and private charters boarded 6,957 passengers for an increase of 35.59-percent.

The crew at SBN includes three air carriers and connections world-wide. The SBN multi-modal terminal serves more than 1-million air, rail and bus passengers each year with an estimated annual economic impact on South Bend and the surrounding communities in excess of $1.7-billion according to the 2012 Economic Impact Report from the Aviation Authority of Indiana.
