Benton Harbor Arts Association Summer Art Hop

Over a decade ago the Benton Harbor Arts Association started hosting quarterly events in the Benton Harbor Arts District and dubbed it ‘Art Hop’. The idea came about as a way to showcase the artists and shops in the growing district by holding an outdoor art show where residents and supporters of local arts could walk through the district and enjoy displays featuring paintings, glass blown pieces, music and performances. This summer’s art hop, taking place from 6pm to 9pm on June 10 promises to be one of the best yet.

Since its inception, the Benton Harbor Arts District has grown from a handful of artists to a local hub for all of artistic disciplines including theatre, the culinary arts, microbrewing, and artists galleries and shop of all mediums.

“Art Hop is an opportunity to invite people to the Benton Harbor Arts District so they can experience what a wonderful and vibrant art community we have here,” says Benton Harbor Arts Association (BHAA) President, and Owner of Thayer Products, Tammi Phillippe. “It’s also fun because it’s different every time. It’s always new, and always eclectic. This year, with our partnerships with the Krasl Art Center, we are able to feature interactive art for everyone to enjoy.”

A few of the interactive pieces include an art vending machine called ‘Egg Prize’ where, for .50 cents, patrons can get an egg-shaped capsule from a custom painted vending machine that contains an original piece of art by Krasl Art Lab artist David Kail. Also on display is an installation featuring dozens of vibrantly painted bird houses placed throughout the district that will echo your words back to you in a different voice called Adolescent Echo, by Craig Merchant.

Inside local arts district venues, such as the 210 Art Space, ARS Gallery Arts & Culture Center’s ARS Gallery II, and The Hawk’s Nest there will be multiple artists work on display from beach glass art and quilling to ceramic sculptures and pottery. There will also be live music at the Benton Harbor Public Library and the Livery. Mostly, organizers are excited to be able to get everyone back to the arts district to be together and unified in a true appreciation for the arts.

“We are all so happy that it feels that we are getting back to a place where people are comfortable coming back together and coming to these types of events,” says Tammi. “And with all the great dining and beverage options like The Houndstooth, The Mason Jar, The Livery, Soul Grounds Café, Forte Coffee, The Brick House, Ben’s Pretzels and North Pier (Brewing Company) and the North Shore Inn just up the street, it’s a great night out, supporting local arts and being a part of a local movement that keeps growing here in Benton Harbor.”
