Berrien County Sheriff Urges: Stay Off the Roads

Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey has issued an appeal for the public to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary as the State of Emergency continues over the next 24 hours or better. Bailey issued a statement this evening as follows:

Due to the current inclement weather conditions Sheriff Bailey is requesting that people stay off the roads when possible. Snow and wind, along with extreme cold temperatures can create hazardous travel conditions. If you must travel we ask that you consider the following safety tips:

  • Make sure you have plenty of gas in case you get stuck or delayed for a long period of time in traffic…
  • Make sure to have extra clothing and blankets in your vehicle…
  • Clear snow and ice from your windows and lights…
  • Leave plenty of distance for stopping when approaching intersections on snow covered and icy roads…
  • Don’t use “cruise control” while driving in wintry conditions…
  • Allow for extra travel time and slow down. Posted speed limits are set for dry conditions and may be too fast for current road conditions…
  • Drive with headlights on at all times…
  • Leave room for maintenance vehicles, snow plows and emergency vehicles. Stay back at least 200 feet from a snow plow and do not pass on the right…
  • Avoid driving during a winter storm and if possible, only travel during daylight…
