Berrien County Sheriff’s Deputies honored for livesaving efforts

Two deputies with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department have received Lifesaving Awards for their efforts to revive a man in medical distress at the Niles police complex this month. Berrien County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Robert Boyce told county commissioners Thursday Deputies Elizabeth Turner and Perry Godush were working at the complex on March 10 when a man in the holding cell turned blue.

“Deputy Turner and Deputy Godush, along with a Niles city officer, immediately began CPR on the individual with some assistance from paramedics and firefighters,” Boyce said. “Deputy Turner and Deputy Godush utilized an AED during their CPR efforts until the iniduvidual regained a pulse and regained consciousness.”

The man was taken to Corewell Health in Niles to be treated. The sheriff’s department commended the two deputies for their quick action. They’ll also be honored later at a meeting of the Niles City Council.
