Berrien Road Department Announces Seasonal Weight Restrictions Begin Monday

Commercial fleet operators, big rig handlers and other heavy equipment operators who take to the open roads in Michigan’s Great Southwest are getting word today that seasonal weight restrictions will take effect at 6am next Monday, March 1st, 2021.

The seasonal weight restrictions going into effect impact all Berrien County Townships, according to the Berrien County Road Department which issued the notice.

The County Road Department has ordered seasonal weight restrictions or “Frost Laws,” as they are commonly referred to, to take effect at that time and date on Berrien County Roads.

Enacting seasonal weight restrictions reduces the “Maximum Axle Load” by 35-percent per axle under state rule MCL 257.722(5).

Speed is also reduced to 35-mph for all commercial vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Rating of 10,000lbs or more under state rule MCL 257.627(6).

The maximum wheel load shall be reduced to 450lbs. psi. of tire width under state rule MCL 257.722(5).

Those who would like a map of the roads that are not affected by these seasonal weight restrictions are encouraged to contact the Berrien County Road Department.

All oversized vehicles are reminded to contact the department’s offices to speak with the Berrien County Road Department Weighmaster regarding written approval for any oversized trips.
