Blossomtime Names Award-Winning Floats

A glorious Saturday in May is just what Blossomtime organizers always dream about, and Mother Nature delivered exactly as requested, rolling out a red carpet day. With brilliant blue skies, abundant sunshine, and temperatures hovering in the mid-70s, it was a great day for a parade. While last weekend’s Blessing of the Blossoms had failed to achieve the desired look, a warm weather week brought out many a blossom throughout the fields, orchards and vineyards of Michigan’s Great Southwest just in time for the parade.

Thousands of spectators lined the streets of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor welcoming participating communities, their floats, their bands, and others to the 2018 Grand Floral Parade with its theme of “Roll Out the Red Carpet.”

Judges performed their duties while studying the floats up close and personal before they even ventured onto the parade route so that each winning entry could be identified with a banner carried down the route ahead of the actual float.

Here’s what the judges decided and what the public saw along the colorful route:

Sweepstakes Award: Hartford’s “A Fair to Remember” — For outstanding float concept and artistic merit of: theme, creativity, color, animation, beauty and floral display. 

President’s Award: Berrien Springs’ “Berrien County Youth Fair” — For the second most outstanding float concept and artistic merit of: theme, color, animation, beauty and floral display.

Board of Director’s Award: Stevensville’s “Rolling out the Red Carpet for Stevensville” — For the third most outstanding float concept and artistic merit of: theme, color, animation, beauty and floral display.

Mayor’s Award: Bridgman’s “Sunset at Weko Beach” — For the float exhibiting excellence in presenting the Festival theme.

Queen’s Award: Eau Claire/Sodus’ “Agriculture” — For the float exhibiting excellence in beauty and dramatic impact.

Twin Cities’ Award: Baroda’s “Sparkle & Shine” — For the float exhibiting excellence with the outstanding use, display and floral craftsmanship of live flowers and blossoms. 

Chairman’s Award: St. Joseph’s “1937 Sweepstakes Winner” — For the float exhibiting excellence in creativity and impressive use of animation and movement, both live and mechanical.

Parade Committee’s Award: Buchanan’s “City of Buchanan” — For the float exhibiting excellence in the presentation and use of color and color harmony. 

King’s Award — Tow Unit: Bridgman’s “Sunset at Weko Beach” — For the tow unit exhibiting excellence in the presentation and use of color and color harmony.
