Benton Harbor City Commissioners have approved a resolution of support for Lake Deity, a public art installation proposed for Jean Klock Park.
Commissioners this week approved the resolution without comment as part of their regular meeting. Lake Deity is being planned by Detroit-based artist and St. Joseph native Foster Willey, who told a city committee last month the 15-foot stainless steel piece is intended to pay homage to the importance of Lake Michigan.
“The sculpture’s form depicts the lake as a seated figure abstracted into sweeping, wave-like forms that suggest motion and grace,” Willey said.
Willey said the sculpture is intended to be oriented to the west toward the setting sun, so its alignment will correspond with the summer solstice. He’s been working with local supporters to help make Lake Deity possible.
“I’m very pleased to announce that the Benton Harbor Arts Association has agreed to serve as our fiduciary, and I quote, ‘The Benton Harbor Art Association recognizes the artistic, cultural, educational, and community significance of the Lake Deity Project.'”
Willey said he’s put together a committee of local business owners and supporters of the arts to raise the $325,000 needed to install the sculpture at the park.
The resolution approved by the city commission this week notes the piece could help the city achieve its goal of boosting regional tourism, beach attendance, and parking utilization through unique community landmarks and cultural attractions.
The resolution also says the commission supports the preliminary design and concept of Lake Deity and approves its placement within Jean Klock Park, pending final administrative review of engineering specifications, safety standards, and exact positioning.
