Fatal Crash Downs Lines – Closing Highway

A single car crash that killed a man and injured a child is resulting in a complete shutdown of Red Arrow Highway at the Bridgman exit of I-94 due to high voltage power lines downed by the accident.

The Berrien County Road Commission and Baroda-Lake Township Police have both posted to social media this afternoon the complete shutdown of Red Arrow Highway for "at least 10 to 12 hours" in order to make repairs on the downed high-voltage lines. The lines are not directly impacting I-94, but Red Arrow will be closed until close to midnight or after with traffic being detoured down Browntown Road to California Road.

The crash has also impacted the BP Service station at that exit and has put the traffic light on Red Arrow Highway at Sawyer Road out of commission as well.

The crash, involving an out-of-state traveler, happened around the noon hour, and closed the I-94 ramp at Bridgman at first, but when the power line situation proved to be more damaging than had been expected, American Electric Power Company crews asked that Red Arrow be closed down completely at that location so repairs to the line could be made.

The unidentified man was killed instantly in the crash and the child riding in the car was taken to the hospital. Authorities on the scene said that the child was talking with police when removed from the vehicle, however the child's medical condition is unknown at this time.
