The federal government has filed suit against the former owners of a New Buffalo meadery, alleging they defaulted on a Small Business Administration-backed loan with more than $104,000 remaining unpaid.
According to a complaint filed May 29 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan, the United States is seeking to recover the debt from Black Dragon LLC, which operated as Black Dragon Meadery, along with Dragonbyte LLC and owner Paul Peterson.
Crain’s Grand Rapids Business reports the loan originated in 2018 through an SBA lending program. The government alleges the loan is in default and is seeking repayment of the outstanding balance, interest, and other costs.
Black Dragon Meadery operated a taproom in New Buffalo before closing several years ago. The business specialized in mead, an alcoholic beverage made from fermented honey.
The lawsuit remains pending in federal court. No response from the defendants had been posted in the court docket as of Tuesday morning.
