First-Ever “Sip! Buchanan” Showcases Revamped Downtown May 16

Sip Buchanan

There’s a fresh reason to take another look at downtown Buchanan.

After several years of roadwork, infrastructure upgrades, and building improvements, the city will formally show off its new look with the first-ever “Sip! Buchanan” event on Saturday, May 16 — a full-day celebration designed to bring people back downtown.

The event, organized by the Buchanan Area Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Development Authority, runs from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and mixes a community festival atmosphere with a tasting tour featuring regional wineries, breweries, and distilleries.

Organizers have built a full day to appeal to just about everyone — not just those interested in tastings.

The morning kicks off with Run! Buchanan, offering a 1-mile, 5K and 10K race, followed by the Buchanan Farmers Market at The Common. At the same time, a classic car show will line Front Street, adding a nostalgic touch to the newly rebuilt downtown corridor.

By midday, the focus shifts to live entertainment, shopping, and family-friendly activities, including street performers, balloon art, and interactive magic. Local businesses will also be open with specials and promotions throughout the day.

Sip, Stroll and Shop

The centerpiece of the event begins at 2 p.m. with the optional tasting tour.

Visitors age 21 and up can purchase a wristband for access to multiple tasting stations set up throughout downtown. The format is designed to be walkable and relaxed — encouraging guests to move between shops, sample local beverages, and experience the district’s updated look along the way.

A beer and wine garden will also be open through the evening.

Music and a Community Finish

Live music runs throughout the afternoon, leading into a headlining evening performance by regional band Shock Roxy from 7 to 10 p.m. at The Common.

Organizers are positioning the day as both a celebration and a statement — a way to reintroduce Buchanan’s downtown as a destination after a period of major disruption.

Organizers say this is more than just another festival. It’s effectively a “grand re-opening” feel for downtown Buchanan:

  • A chance to see the results of long-awaited infrastructure improvements
  • An easy, walkable event with something for all ages
  • A regional draw highlighting Southwest Michigan’s wineries, breweries, and small businesses

And importantly — most daytime activities are free, making it an easy add to the calendar whether you stay for an hour or the entire day.
