Heads Up for I-94 Truckers

If your business has commercially licensed drivers on the road anywhere in the region this week, you might want to give them a heads up regarding an international roadcheck operation underway through June 9th at weigh stations and rest stops throughout the state.

Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Officers from the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division are conducting enforcement operations at weigh station facilities and in rest area locations across Michigan as part of the nationwide 29th Annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance International Roadcheck Operation.

During the operation, which begins this morning and runs through Thursday, June 9th, a Level I inspection, which includes an interview with the driver of the vehicle, a review of all required documentation and a full inspection of vehicle components will be conducted on all commercial motor vehicles.

This year's specific safety focus is tire safety, which will provide an opportunity for officers to educate drivers about the importance of proper tire maintenance.

The enforcement action is a more traditional approach than the "Eyes on 94" campaign conducted last December along the interstate in a multi-state enforcement effort with Indiana State Police and the Ohio Highway Patrol. That effort was a full on attempt to reduce commercial vehicle crashes as officers focused on violations by commercial vehicle drivers. That effort focused on speeding, following too closely, passing improperly, driving while distracted, and improper lane use.

This effort is focused on the condition of the truck and the proper credentialing for commercial vehicle operation as well as driver knowledge.
