The Berrien County Health Department will host its annual Back-to-School Bash this month.
Health department hearing and vision coordinator Melisa Jordan tells us the event is a way to help parents get their kids ready for a new school year.
“There are a few requirements for school entry, which are immunizations, as well as hearing, vision, and dental screenings now are a basic requirement for the kindergarten entry screening,” Jordan said. “So we thought it would be a simple one-stop shop for all the families just to click easy in and out. Let’s make it as easy as possible.”
There will actually be two Back to School Bashes. The first will be at the Berrien County Health Department office in Benton Harbor on Tuesday, August 25, while the second will be at its office in Niles on Thursday, August 27. Both will run from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The department will offer free vision, hearing, and dental screenings at the events, and Jordan says they’ll make it fun for the kids.
“We have cotton candy and popcorn at our Benton Harbor back to school bash and at our Niles back to school bash, we’re going to have popcorn offered as well as other snacks. We also have games going on. Just a little couple of quick fun games.”
Jordan says the health department screened more than 130 kids with the events last year. Everyone’s welcome to attend with no appointments needed.
