The city of St. Joseph will celebrate the temporary opening of a new attraction on Wednesday.
City Manager Emily Hackworth told city commissioners this week they’re holding a public ribbon cutting of a new pop-up park in the northwest corner of the Pear parking lot across Broad Street from St. Joseph City Hall.
“In the world’s smallest patch of grass,” Hackworth said. “It was suggested by someone on Facebook and it got 425 likes so we said, ‘OK, we’ll do it.’ And thanks to Rotary, they are funding a little free library and they are going to put in an Adirondack chair. We had a naming competition and the name is to be revealed.”
By far, this will be the city’s smallest park, although Hackworth stressed it’s a “temporary pocket park,” noting the city parks board agreed to the concept with that understanding.
The name of the pocket park will be revealed at Wednesday’s ribbon cutting, which is set for 4 p.m. All are welcome and those who attend are asked to bring a book to give to the little free library.
