I-94 project in Berrien County pushed back

Work to repave I-94 between Benton Harbor and Stevensville has been delayed. Michigan Department of Transportation spokesperson Nick Schirripa tells us the agency was planning to start the project this year.

“The original plan would have been to be done in 2025, early 2025, and now we’re going into 2026,” Schirripa said. “So, there will be some work that starts late this season. Most of that work likely will be getting ready, with some pavement repairs and building crossovers to help maintain traffic through the project. The lion’s share of the work will be done in 2024 through 2026.”

Schirripa says the original cost estimate for the work was $153 million, but now the updated cost won’t be known until bids come in. In addition to repaving the highway, the project will mean work on eleven bridges and improvements to exits and onramps. Once firm dates are established for different parts of the work, MDOT will update the public.
