Is Your Organization Protected from Embezzlement?

Is your non-profit organization ripe for an attack from the inside? Do your board members understand the financial consequences of employee or member embezzlement or other funny-business with your team’s finances? If too many people on your board end up asking things like, “What do all those financial numbers mean?” you may be witnessing one of the reddest of red flags ever.

With the members of a nonprofit board being ultimately responsible for the financial condition of the organization they serve, it’s always a good thing to give them the best possible understanding of their surroundings possible so everybody works together to limit the risks your team will face. The good news is, there’s a SCORE Workshop for that.

An upcoming workshop at the Benton Harbor offices of Kinexus will help nonprofit board members understand what financial information they should be given, what that information means, and what financial events serve as “red flags” that warrant further investigation.  They’ll also learn how to compare your organization’s financial performance with that of other nonprofits.

We’ve all seen the news about people embezzling money from the organizations they are work for.  In this workshop, participants will learn procedures to be used to ensure that the organization’s funds are being properly handled. This workshop is being presented by Kenneth W. Huff, whose 45 year career in not-for-profit organizations witnessed two CEOs going to Federal prison.

Ken earned his BBA in Business in 1968 and his MBA in Finance in 1976, at Wayne State University, Detroit Michigan.  In addition to SCORE, Ken serves on the Board of Directors of the Bridgman Public Library.

Nonprofit board members, senior staff and key volunteers who want to understand what all those numbers mean should register today.

A discounted fee of $15 can be paid online by credit card or PayPal and includes all course materials. Payment at the door will also be accepted; $20 by check or cash only.

The workshop takes place on Tuesday, June 13th, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Kinexus, located at 499 W. Main Street in Benton Harbor at the Riverview traffic circle.

Registration online is available right now by clicking this link: www.kalamazoo.score.org (Take a Workshop tab).
