The opening of the new Lake Michigan Vintners Tasting Room in downtown Baroda has sparked considerable interest in the Lake Michigan College Wine & Viticulture program at the Midwest’s only teaching winery, and that interest has brought about an upcoming open house for prospective students interested in learning more about the program.

Program Director & Winemaker Michael Moyer will host the open house along with his team from the tasting room and current students already enrolled in the unique program that takes students all the way from planting the grapes in the vineyard to pouring the wines in the tasting room. It’s not too late to enroll for the fall semester with the next class starting up at LMC.

The Wine & Viticulture Open House for prospective students and others interested in the teaching winery’s programming will take place on Wednesday, August 23rd from 5pm to 6:30pm at the Lake Michigan Vintners Tasting Room at 8972 First Street in downtown Baroda.

As a guest at the Open House you will meet program director Moyer, as well as currently enrolled wine program students and winery staff members. College personnel will be on hand to answer questions about admissions, financial aid and testing.

Wine produced by LMC’s wine students will be available for tasting, along with light snacks.

Students in the program can earn an Associate Degree in Wine and Viticulture Technology in as little as one year. Fall 2017 semester classes begin September 5.

While the open house is a free event, RSVPs are requested and they are due by next Friday, August 18 to Laura at lmorris@lakemichigancollege.edu or by calling 269-599-3101. For additional questions regarding the wine program ahead of time, you can contact Michael at MMoyer@lakemichigancollege.edu or 269-927-8617.

The teaching winery is the first of its kind in the Midwest.

Lake Michigan College launched the Wine & Viticulture Technology program with the support of leading wineries spanning the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail up to Old Mission Peninsula.

Their aim is to foster the next generation of expert winemakers, and to advance the state in its burgeoning status as a recognized, world class wine region.

Students of the program experience every aspect of the wine industry, including vineyard management, winemaking, lab analysis, and all aspects of business and tasting room operations.

Moyer was recruited by Lake Michigan College from the state of Washington to run the program. Since earning a Master’s Degree in Enology from University of California-Davis, Moyer worked for some of the nation’s most esteemed wineries. Now, Moyer has become an evangelist for Michigan wine.

The winemaker says, “Southwest Michigan has a longer growing season than Burgundy, France, but we’re still one of the best kept secrets in the wine world. It’s exciting to partner with our area wineries who’ve been laying the groundwork, and to see our potential unfolding.”
