If you are looking to make a difference in someone’s life this Summer, area Lions Clubs may have an opportunity for you.  They need volunteer adult counselors for their camp for special needs kids.  The details came to us in a release from the Lions:

Camp Leo is an overnight summer camp experience for children, ages 10-17, with developmental disabilities who live in Berrien, Cass, and VanBuren counties.  The camp is sponsored by the Lions and Lioness Clubs of Southwest Michigan. This year’s camp will be held July 30-August 2 at Warner Camp in Grand Junction, Michigan. The camp’s director, Beth Helm, is currently seeking applications for adult camp counselors as well as high-school students to serve as junior counselors. Volunteers are also welcome.

“Working at Camp Leo is a magical and transformative experience,” said Helm. “Students who wouldn’t typically be able to participate in traditional summer camp activities have the opportunity to enjoy a 4-day overnight camp experience, thanks to the Lions and Lioness Clubs of Southwest Michigan. Their generous sponsorship of the event provides children the chance to look beyond their disabilities and simply have fun.”

Participants will enjoy many activities during the camp. From swimming, roasting marshmallows, canoeing, singing campfire songs, learning outdoor skills and making lifelong friendships, there is fun to be had by everyone! The best part – Camp Leo culminates with a carnival hosted by Lions and Lioness Club members. Campers play games, win prizes and enjoy carnival-style treats.

According to past camper Dwayne, as soon as returning to school from winter break shared, “I (am) going to Camp Leo. My bags (are) packed!” Dwayne’s mother confirmed that indeed, his bags were packed – all his Camp Leo shirts and underwear for the week! For Dwayne, Camp Leo is his next favorite activity after Christmas. He is ready for Camp Leo, even in January!

Past Camp Leo camper Stephanie said, “I love camp as much as Starbucks!” For Stephanie, that is a big deal.

“Clearly, Camp Leo has created important memories for these individuals,” said Helm. “However, to help these campers truly have an impactful experience, we need the support of a dedicated and caring staff. Even though the job lasts less than one week, it is a tremendously rewarding experience. We truly get to make a difference in the campers’ lives.”

Interested applicants for this one-week summer position should apply online at www.campleoswmi.com. Counselors should have experience working with children with disabilities and will be subject to a background check.
