Local firefighters awarded for life-saving efforts in I-94 crash

Three members of the Lincoln Charter Township Fire Department earned life saving awards at their annual appreciation Dinner on Saturday night.

Chief Brandon Chiarello, Firefighter George Gaunder, and Firefighter Christian Nitz earned the awards for their efforts to save an individual who was trapped under a guard rail during an snowy Dec. 9 crash involving two semi trucks and another vehicle. Westbound I-94, after M-63, west of exit 27, was closed for several hours following the crash.

“Upon arrival there was an individual trapped under the trailer of the semi and guard rail,” said the Department, in a Dec. 16 Facebook post said. “Quick work by the Lincoln Township Firefighters and the towing company allowed the individual to save his leg and ultimately his life. The firefighters were able to use our extrication equipment to free the individual enough from under the guard rail to be removed.”
