Who knew there was ever the possibility in America to become an overnight billionaire? The Mega Millions jackpot has jumped another $30-million today and now stands at a record $1-billion for tonight’s drawing. The cash option for the jackpot is $565-million.

The $1 billion jackpot is the largest Mega Millions jackpot ever and second largest jackpot in U.S. Lottery history. The biggest Lottery jackpot in U.S. and world history was a $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot. Three lucky ticket holders from California, Florida, and Tennessee matched the five white balls and Powerball to win that huge jackpot on January 13, 2016.

The last Michigan player to win a Mega Millions jackpot was Kevin Blake, of Waterford. Blake won half of the game’s $42 million jackpot in October 2017. The other winning ticket for that jackpot was purchased in Rhode Island.

If a Michigan player wins tonight’s $1 billion jackpot, it would be the largest Mega Millions prize ever won in the state and the largest ever Michigan Lottery prize. On April 22, 2005, a Port Huron couple, Ralph and Mary Stebbins, won $208 million playing Mega Millions. On August 15, 2012, Donald Lawson, of Lapeer, won a $337 million Powerball jackpot. Lawson’s jackpot holds the record for the largest Lottery prize ever won in Michigan.

Mega Millions drawings take place each Tuesday and Friday evening. Each Mega Millions play is only $2. For an additional $1 per play, players have the opportunity to add a “Megaplier” that can multiply non-jackpot prizes by up to five times.

Mega Millions tickets for tonight’s drawing may be purchased online at MichiganLottery.com and at the Lottery’s 11,000 retailers around the state until 10:45 pm tonight.

About 97 cents of every dollar spent on Lottery tickets is returned to the state in the form of contributions to the state School Aid Fund, prizes to players and commissions to vendors and retailers. In the 2017 fiscal year, the Lottery’s contribution to Michigan’s public schools was a record $924.1-million. Since it began in 1972, the Lottery has contributed more than $21-billion to support public education in Michigan.
