Michigan Needs Jobs — Good Jobs — Says Biz Leaders Group

If your paycheck leaves you wanting for more, it would appear you are not alone in the state of Michigan. Business Leaders for Michigan says they’ve learned in the last week that fully 62-percent of all jobs in Michigan pay less than $20 per hour. Breaking it down even further, two-thirds of those jobs pay less than $15 per hour. The group is calling for legislation to advance the Good Jobs for Michigan plan soon to help remedy the situation.

When you put it all into perspective, Michigan ranks 33rd in the nation in per capita income in absolute terms.

That…says Business Leaders for Michigan CEO Doug Rothwell…is not good enough. He says, “Michigan doesn’t just need more jobs, we need more good jobs — jobs that help people afford the food, housing, child care and transportation they need to be prosperous.” He adds, “Good paying jobs will allow our residents to grow and thrive. Good paying jobs will make our state stronger and more competitive.”

Business Leaders for Michigan, a top flight organization comprised of the Chief Executive Officers of the largest companies based in the Great Lakes State, is backing the Good Jobs for Michigan plan offered up by Michigan Senate Bills 242-244 because they believe that all communities deserve the opportunity to transform their regions by having tools to compete for large scale projects with hundreds of good paying jobs.

Rothwell and his colleagues say that the Good Jobs proposal is a transparent, performance-based strategy for ensuring Michigan’s competitiveness in a day and age where economic incentives are the norm.

The high-powered group argues that Michigan is losing jobs and opportunities to Ohio and Indiana that “frankly, should be coming to Michigan.” The contend that Michigan hurts itself by failing to roll out the red carpet for new and expanding businesses when competitors are offering such compelling incentive packages.

In a dispatch to loyal followers today, Business Leaders for Michigan say, “The state must act to compete for the good jobs we need. Join us in supporting Senate Bills 242-244, and reach out to your lawmakers today! Urge policymakers to adopt the this package swiftly, so we can put more Michiganders back to work at income levels that make sense in the 21st century.”
